Elephant Sanctuary

There are about 7000 elephants left in Thailand, of which more than half are domesticated. Traditionally, domesticated elephants were used to clear trees and move heavy timber. In modern times, they are often consigned to being harnessed with seats and overworked in the tourist industry. This experience is designed to help alleviate the commercial pressure on elephants by providing a more respectful way to meet these friendly and peaceful creatures.

Itinerary

  • We’ll pick you up at your resort, and upon arriving at our camp you’ll meet your Mahout, who’s taking care of the elephant. Learn what’s required to take care of these massive animals. Then, we’ll prepare some snacks for the elephants, like sugar cane, bananas and papayas, which you can feed to your elephant when you meet them.
  • Take a walk with your elephant and his mahout through the former palm oil plantation that was turned into the elephants’ new spacious home, and learn about the elephant culture of Thailand, and the special language used by Mahouts to communicate. Arriving at the river, experience the delights of joining the elephants for a mud spa and then washing them in the small stream -splash around and wash it down. This will be a muddy good time!
  • Walk back to the camp, and thank your elephant with more treats. Say goodbye with a last photo and then head back to your resort.
